London’s Most Unusual Bar Is Opening in Covent Garden — And the Oysters Aren’t on the Menu

Londoners are about to experience one of the capital’s most unexpected pop-ups: an oyster bar where the oysters are working behind the scenes instead of being served on plates. Pet food company Purina is bringing a live oyster filtration experience to Covent Garden later this month, inviting visitors, and their dogs, to discover how oysters naturally clean seawater and support marine biodiversity.

Running for two days only, the immersive installation aims to shine a spotlight on oyster reef restoration projects taking place off the Norfolk coast as part of Purina’s wider European Ocean Restoration Programme.

Rather than focusing on food, the event will feature live demonstrations showing oysters filtering murky seawater in real time, helping guests understand the important role the shellfish play in maintaining healthier marine ecosystems.

Visitors will also hear from marine conservation experts about the deployment of four million oysters off the Norfolk coast — a long-term restoration initiative designed to improve water quality, rebuild habitats and encourage marine biodiversity.

The experience has been designed to be fully pet-friendly, with dogs actively encouraged to attend alongside their owners. Guests can explore interactive sensory stations inspired by the beach and sea, take part in shareable photo opportunities and enjoy complimentary dog treats throughout the event.

Purina will also be offering free pet nutrition and wellness advice from experts, alongside complimentary samples of dog and cat food for visitors to take home.

As an added incentive, attendees can enter a competition to win a dog-friendly getaway to The Victoria in Holkham, Norfolk, worth up to £1,000.

The event is being delivered in partnership with marine conservation organisation Oyster Heaven, which works to restore native oyster reefs in UK waters.

Claire Robinson-Davies, Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Director at Purina UK, said the company wanted to bring marine restoration to life in an engaging and accessible way.

“We use fish ingredients, primarily from highly nutritious fish by-products in many of our recipes, so supporting the environments they come from matters to us,” she said.

“Through our work with Oyster Heaven, we’re delighted to be supporting the restoration of native oyster reefs off the Norfolk coast.

“We’re really excited to be able to show the incredible cleaning power of oysters, live and in person, in a central London venue and to demonstrate the important job that the oysters will be doing metres down in the sea off the Norfolk coast, which is not something you get to witness every day.”

George Birch, Founder of Oyster Heaven, said the event offers a rare opportunity for people to see the ecological impact oysters can have firsthand.

“By restoring oyster reefs, you’re not just bringing back a species, you’re helping to rebuild a habitat that supports a wide range of marine life,” he said.

“Projects like this take time, but they can play an important role in improving water quality and supporting coastal ecosystems over the long term.”

Beyond oyster reef restoration, Purina says its wider Ocean Restoration Programme also supports projects restoring kelp forests and seagrass meadows across Europe.

For Londoners looking for something different this spring, especially dog owners, this may be the city’s most unusual bar experience yet.
